Scunthorpe boss Alan Knill felt his improving side were good value their point at Colchester following a hard-fought 1-1 draw.

New signing Josh Walker scored on his debut with a deflected shot to give Iron an eighth-minute lead, but Colchester claimed a share of the spoils, thanks to Steven Gillespie's 28th-minute penalty, which the striker converted after being tripped by Iron defender Paul Reid.

Knill said: "It was a game we could have won. They had chances in the first few minutes of the game and I was very concerned at that point, but the good thing was that they didn't take them.

"We were much the stronger team after half-time and were much more aggressive as a back four. I'm delighted we had the opportunity to turn it round after half-time because they could have been out of sight in the first half.

"But at the same time, we had some chances in the first half as well. We had an 'iffy' first half, but in the second half we were excellent and we dominated the game.

"I'm disappointed we didn't get that second goal, because we did everything apart from put the ball in the back of the net. But it was a fantastic effort again from the players, because this is a difficult place to come."
