TEAMtalk assesses the England captaincy options after John Terry was stripped of the honour until his racism trial is resolved.
Terry will face trial in July over an allegation that he racially abused QPR defender Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League match in October. Terry strenuously denies the charge.
England manager Fabio Capello must find somebody new to wear the armband at Euro 2012 this summer and hereTEAMtalk takes a look at some of the candidates.
STEVEN GERRARD
England's long-time vice-captain could easily settle back into the role based on experience, but Capello has given the Liverpool skipper a trial as his captain before but instead chose to restore Terry to the role.
FRANK LAMPARD
Lampard has stepped in as captain before when injuries have kept others out, and with 90 caps to his name, there is no question of his experience. But his failure to hold down a regular place in the Chelsea side this season, and his advancing years, would suggest this would be a short-term appointment at best.
SCOTT PARKER
Parker has emerged as one of the early favourites to take on the role after his impressive displays this season for Tottenham. But at 31, and with only 10 caps to his name, Parker is yet to prove himself at international level, having failed to make the cut for the last World Cup.
WAYNE ROONEY
Rooney has experience of captaining United and is seen as a natural leader on the field. However, ill-discipline cost him a two-match suspension that rules him out of the start of Euro 2012, and would also surely rule him out of consideration too.
GARETH BARRY
The former Aston Villa captain has earned a regular role in Capello's side in recent years and was handed the England captaincy for a friendly against Egypt in 2010 as well as late in friendly games when others have been substituted. But the 30-year-old hardly has the most commanding personality in the England dressing room and is unlikely to be at the front of the queue.
ASHLEY COLE
No England player in the current squad has more experience than the 93-times capped Cole, but he has rarely been seen as a leader on the pitch.
JACK WILSHERE
The Arsenal midfielder might be a long-term choice down the road, but the injuries that have ruled him out of action for the entire season so far could keep him out of Euro 2012 too, meaning he will have to wait his turn.
JOE HART
The Manchester City goalkeeper has emerged as a candidate who could make the job his own for many years to come, but the 24-year-old has never captained a club side at senior level and would be a wild-card selection.
